I was alone, for the first time, lost on the curb, between endless moving legs, unable to cross the streets in fear of the moving metal boxes. I was watching the tragic lives of the other cats, dying of illness, hunger, and sadness. It didn’t take me long to realize it would happen to me as well, and there was nothing to do about it. The streets were nothing more than a purgatory, or perhaps hell.
